Woman make up half of those taking concealed carry handgun classes

Wow there is a lot of news regarding women jumping into getting handgun training. My wife and I took some training together as soon as she got her first hand gun several years ago. Training was provided by the venerable Louis Auerbach and that was before the crazy training/firearm boom.

Every time the number of people who are carrying a handgun increases, incidents of violent crime go down, he said.

“The bad guys don't know who is carrying. Bad guys are like coyotes — they look for the weakness. When there is knowledge of women carrying, criminals don't know who is carrying protection.”

Where restrictive gun-carrying laws prevail, such as in Washington, D.C., violent crime rates are higher, said Dillon.

“Go into Virginia, there is 97 percent less violent crimes because they have a concealed carry permit use.”

It's not paranoia, it's being prepared, he said. Dillon is a 36-year police veteran.

Women handgun ownership up due to linked to irrational fears of losing gun rights.

That's right!

But gun-control advocates say the trend also could be linked to irrational fears of losing gun rights and more women may mistakenly buy into the gun-lobby rhetoric that gun ownership improves their personal safety.

That's what "gun-control" is, law abiding citizens losing gun rights. I also like the gun-lobby rhetoric part.  What about the gun-control rhetoric?

The more balanced the participation in the shooting sports by the general population the more reasonably the subject will be viewed in society as a whole.

The Twin Falls woman wants to help change the perception that guns are just a man’s hobby. Not all women are ignorant of guns, she said, just as not all men are gun savvy. She encourages women to become acquainted with firearms and to practice shooting, even taking classes to obtain concealed-carry permits.

Conceal and carry laws fuel surge in female gun ownership: Yah!

 Great story here reflecting the changing attitudes toward gun ownership:

"The Kansas City Police Department employee is used to her semi-automatic, but the borrowed gun, a wood-grip .38 Taurus revolver, had its appeal.

“Easier to control your shot,” she said. “No recoil.”

A shooter for several years, Hunt was not surprised to hear that more women are buying handguns, honing accuracy and toting them in their purses in states like Missouri and Kansas that have conceal and carry weapon laws."

By the numbers

60 percent of firearm retailers reported an increase in female customers, according to a National Shooting Sports survey.

1 in 4 American women say they personally own a firearm, according to an October Gallup poll.

43 percent of women reported at least one firearm in their home and 23 percent said it was theirs in the same Gallup poll.
